Judges announced as charity issues final call for entries to inaugural Art Award - 16.05.2019

ORGINALLY POSTED 16TH MAY 2019

The North York Moors National Park Trust is reminding artists to seek inspiration in the changing mood, light and forms of the region’s stunning wintery landscapes while entries for the 2019 Art Award are still open.

The competition, which was launched by photographer Joe Cornish and artist Peter Hicks, is for works of art that have been inspired by the diverse scenery of the North York Moors National Park. The Award is designed to celebrate all that is beautiful and unique about the area, in particular the dramatic contrasts that exist between the expansive heather moorland, the enclosed wooded valleys and the rugged, spectacular coastline.

Joe Cornish, who is also a Trustee of the North York Moors National Park Trust, said “What the North York Moors may lack in height, it makes up in other rich measures such as, texture, colour, weather, sense of space, history, and the extreme expressions of seasonal change. Whether abstract or descriptive, the area is a source of endless, dynamic potential for the artist who sees landscape as analogous for the human soul.”

“We call on all artists to participate in the first art award for the North York Moors, and to translate this unique landscape through the lens of their imagination.”

Whilst the Award is an opportunity for artists to create new, innovative work, entry conditions will permit paintings (of any paint media), created since January 2018 that have not been exhibited elsewhere.

Landscape artist Peter Hicks said: “Pursuing a personal vision of our environment, seeing things differently coloured by knowledge and experience without having to copy things is an adventure in colour, enabling us to use the properties of paint to correspond with our feelings about the things we experience. This has been attempted by many artists of perception. You can join them, enjoy the adventure and open our eyes to your individual vision.”

The window for entries closes on Friday 31 May 2019. An exhibition of the entries, entitled ‘Landscapes of the mind and heart’ will open at the Inspired by… gallery at The Moors National Park Centre in the summer. Prizes will be awarded for the judges’ two favourite pieces, along with two further awards for the works of art voted as most popular by the public and by Inspired by… gallery Supporters.
